NOVEMBER ISSUE 2017

Bryan DeBaun did a wonderful job of putting together the October social event at Top Golf! It was a brisk, sunny afternoon at I-435 and Nall. Not everyone had a lot of experience golfing but everyone had a lot of fun. The heaters were fired up, the chairs were warm and there was a lot of encouragement from those of us sitting, eating and drinking.

What's new at "The Dotte?"

OCTOBER ISSUE 2017

On Thursday, September 7th eighteen members of the club met at the boatyard to disassemble our existing dock. Dusty Lewis rolled up with his truck, a U-Haul and his trusty reciprocating saw. The work began with untying the docks and taking the first few rows of cubes apart.  The cubes were heavy due to the water they took on and the zebra mussels. This lead to some members using their skills with a sledge hammer and breaking the cubes to release the water trapped inside. The echo of the sledge hammer smacking the cubes in the cove sounded like gun shots off in the distance. The sun had slipped under the horizon and as everyone gathered around the last section of the dock to watch the sledge hammer swing down on the final cube, a cheer went up from the eighteen club members with the crack of the plastic.

Taking the dock apart was the easy part. The new dock was possible due to the long and tireless hours Diane Lewis and Al Hupp spent negotiating and working with The United Government of Wyandotte County to come to an agreement for the purchase of the new dock. Thank you Diane and Al.

KCRC Welcomes the "Roo Crew"

KCRC is very pleased with the addition of the UMKC Crew Team!

Former KCRC rowing member Ben Gans started a rowing team at UMKC two years ago. The team did row on the river but this Fall, UMKC moved to the lake. We are thrilled to welcome the "Roos" to the lake. This is a great opportunity for our Junior rowers to see Collegiate rowers at practice and work.

Two members of The Roo Crew take a moment before their early evening practice.

Bring out the boats!

With all the great weather we've been having, we're sure all of you are itching to get back to the lake and out on the water!  Before that can happen, however, we need to get the boatyard cleaned up and ready for the season.

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend these two dates:

SATURDAY, March 11 at 9:00 a.m.Boatyard preparation. We will make sure all the racks, fence, dock, and shed are in operating condition and ready for our boats. We will remove leaves, branches and debris from the enclosure, and conduct one of our contractually-required park cleanups of the trash in our area so we can provide evidence to the Unified Government of Wyandotte County.

Bring tools, leaf blowers, and rakes if you have them, as well as trash bags and work gloves.  I'm sure someone will bring doughnuts too.

SATURDAY, March 25 time TBA – Boat Day!  We will bring the trailer with the big boats, riggers, oars, and slings to the boatyard to unload, then take the trailer to Woodswether to retrieve the small boats and bring them back to the boatyard to unload.

Bring your truck, van, and roof rack.

All of this work is key to a successful spring season, and will go fast if we have everyone's help! We look forward to seeing all of you there!

Preparing to return to the water

Above: Tim Hills replaces colored tape that identifies oar pairs & inboards. Below: Tim sprays a second finish coat on the blades of our new Alden oars. Photos by Al Hupp

As the Club’s scheduled move back to the boatyard for 2017 approaches, preparations continue behind the scenes. Tim Hills, assisted by Al Hupp, has been working at the winter storage site in Buckeye Industrial Park to prepare boats and equipment for the new season. Tim and Al have:

  • Checked the inboard and length of the Club’s sculling oars, resetting them when necessary;
  • Renewed the tape and numerical markings that identify oar pairs;
  • Changed the handles or grips on seven pairs of sculling oars to give those pairs the smallest diameter handle/grip combination possible;
  • Removed expired Wyandotte County Lake stickers;
  • Removed a number of pre-GPS Stroke Coach impellers, magnets, and wiring harnesses;
  • Repaired two gouges in the hull of the Wintech double; and
  • Installed new Vespoli seats and slides in the Wintech quad.

Tim’s and Al’s most recent project has been to sand and mask the blades of the four sets of new Alden oars donated to the Club in 2016, in preparation for painting those blades with the Club’s colors. Tim and Al also plan to renew the registration numbers on the Club’s two launches. The numbers have started to peel due to constant exposure to the elements.

Wichita Frostbite Regatta
KCRC had a strong showing with 13 masters and six juniors competing in the event. Several medals were won. Race results can be downloaded here. Additional photos of the event can be viewed on the KCRC Shutterfly site.
New Officers and Board Members Elected
KCRC’s board of directors held its annual meeting on Nov. 1 and voted in its new slate of officers who will serve a two-year term. The new officers include:

  • President: Chris Trotter
  • Vice President: Diane Lewis
  • Treasurer: Mallory Hilvitz
  • Secretary: Al Hupp

Other new additions to the board include Bryan DeBaun and Bianca Tropeano, who will both serve for three-year terms as directors. Both Nancy Wendt and Damon Braly exited the board upon the completion of their terms this month. Tom Kimes and Bryan Whitehead will continue to serve on the board, with their terms expiring November 2018.

Ellie Braly Signs to Row at K-State
KCRC junior Ellie Braly signed a National Letter of Intent in early November to row next year for the Kansas State University collegiate rowing team. Ellie has been rowing with KCRC for five years. Here is a link to an article about the signing event where Ellie thanks KCRC coach Jay Coffman.
Winter Training for Masters

Winter training for Masters started on Nov. 28th at Mill Creek Activity Center. To prepare, Tim Hills spent four hours performing annual maintenance on the Club’s 11 ergs. This included removing the flywheel covers to vacuum the fly wheels, checking batteries in the monitors, wiping down the machines, tightening loose fasteners, and oiling the chains. To the left is a photo of Tim preparing to oil the chain on one of the Club’s Concept 2 Model B rowers.

Boats Moved to Winter Storage
KCRC moved all boats and gear to winter storage on Saturday, Nov. 19th. The photos above show the space that has been graciously provided to the Club at Buckeye Industrial Park by Mike Pursell. As the photos show, The Club is able to park the trailer with the large boats (and some of the Club’s doubles) all inside where they are completely protected from the weather. There is room for all of the oars in an area where the Club can also do maintenance and painting. Not shown is a connected, parallel hallway with plenty of space for the Club’s supporting gear, such as motors, life jackets, tents, and the like.

The rest of the doubles and the Club’s singles have been stored separately at the Woodswether Road location used in previous years. The boats there are on a portable rack designed and fabricated last year by Dustin Lewis, former Club President and spouse of Club Vice President Diane Lewis. The rack dramatically reduces the amount of space needed for the small boats.

Those helping with the move included Masters Patrick Allen, Michael Handler, Mallory Hilvitz, Al Hupp, Tom Kimes, Diane Lewis, Peggy Pharr, Bianca Tropeano, and Chris Trotter. Juniors who participated were Ellie Braly, Isabelle Davis, Margo Hunter, Elizabeth Stublen, Will Stublen, Zoe Thompson, and Anna Vogts. Additionally, former KCRC Junior member John Wendt (who now rows for Kansas State University) came out to assist and was a big help loading the trailer at the boatyard.
